Bill overview
The Attacks on Free Press Transparency Act establishes a system for journalists to file complaints against law enforcement misconduct with the Department of Justice. The system will allow for anonymous submissions and attachments like photos and videos. Furthermore, law enforcement agencies that receive funding through the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant program or the 1033 program (military equipment) must respond to these complaints within 60 days, and failure to comply could result in reduced funding. The Department of Justice will also publish an annual report summarizing the complaints received.
