Bill overview
The Reconciliation in Place Names Act establishes a process for the Board on Geographic Names to review and revise names of federal lands that are considered offensive. It creates an Advisory Committee composed of representatives from Indian Tribes, civil rights advocates, and experts in relevant fields to recommend name changes. The Board must consider the committee’s recommendations within three years, unless there’s a compelling reason to reject them or if approval would violate federal law, and will then rename the feature if a recommendation is accepted.
