The Safe Teachers Assistance and Return to School Act of 2020 (STARTS Act) temporarily increases the tax deduction teachers can take for classroom expenses. Specifically, it raises the maximum deduction from $250 to $1,500, with $1,250 of that increase specifically designated for purchasing personal protective equipment and cleaning supplies to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. Any unused portion of the deduction from 2020 can be carried over and applied to the 2021 tax year.
