Bill overview
This bill, the COVID-19 Student Loan Relief Act of 2020, aims to provide relief to borrowers struggling with student loan debt due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It allows certain student loan debts to be discharged in bankruptcy if a borrower’s income has significantly decreased as a result of the pandemic, or if the primary income earner of their family died or became seriously disabled due to COVID-19. The provisions are effective starting January 21, 2020, and will remain in place for 60 days after the COVID-19 emergency ends. This legislation seeks to offer a safety net for borrowers facing financial hardship related to the pandemic.
