This bill, the Ensuring STEAKS Act of 2020, requires the Department of Agriculture to create and regularly update regulations to protect meat processing workers from COVID-19. These regulations will be developed in consultation with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Assistant Secretary of Labor for Occupational Safety and Health. Until permanent regulations are in place, the CDC’s recommendations on worker safety will serve as temporary guidelines for meat processing facilities. The goal is to improve safety conditions for workers during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
