Bill overview
This bill directs the Department of Homeland Security to create a specialized unit, the Border Enforcement Security Task Force (BEST) unit, focused on investigating and combating the illegal trafficking of weapons and related materials across the U.S.-Mexico border. The unit will work in coordination with several federal and international law enforcement agencies to reduce arms smuggling and improve data sharing. It also mandates a report outlining the resources needed for the unit’s operation and updates a key memorandum of understanding between Homeland Security Investigations and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
