Bill overview
The Fair Credit Reporting for Servicemembers Act expands consumer credit protections for active duty and extended active duty uniformed service members. Specifically, it extends protections to servicemembers deployed in combat zones or on U.S. vessels, and also covers those serving in the commissioned corps of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the Public Health Service. The bill prohibits including adverse credit information from periods of extended active duty in consumer reports and requires credit reporting agencies to promptly delete such information when verified and notify the consumer and furnisher. It also establishes a process for servicemembers to provide proof of their extended active duty status and ensures they receive notifications about adverse information and the ability to dispute it.
