Bill overview
This bill, the Michael Lecik Military Firefighters Protection Act, establishes a process for veterans who served as firefighters to receive disability compensation more easily. If a veteran who trained in fire suppression and served at least five years in a firefighting role develops certain cancers or other diseases – including heart, lung, brain, and blood cancers – within 15 years of leaving the military, they may be presumed to have a service-connected illness. This simplifies the process for receiving benefits for these specific conditions.
