Bill overview
The PROTECT Kids Act amends the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) to strengthen online privacy protections for children. It raises the age at which parental consent is required for online data collection from 13 to 16, expands the types of personal information covered (including geolocation and biometric data), and requires websites and apps to delete a child’s information upon a parent’s request. The bill also directs the Federal Trade Commission to study the current ‘actual knowledge’ standard for data collection and recommend potential changes to better protect children’s online privacy.
