Bill overview
The Investor Choice Act of 2019 aims to protect investors by prohibiting financial firms and companies from requiring customers or clients to use mandatory arbitration clauses in their agreements. This legislation restricts firms from limiting a customer’s ability to choose a dispute resolution forum or participate in class action lawsuits. It also applies to securities issuers, preventing them from mandating arbitration in shareholder agreements. Existing arbitration agreements are generally voided, but ongoing arbitration initiated before the law’s enactment is preserved.
