Bill overview
The Non-Opioids Prevent Addiction In the Nation Act (NOPAIN Act) aims to reduce opioid use in Medicare by encouraging the use of non-opioid treatments for pain management. This bill proposes separate payments for certain non-opioid treatments under Medicare’s hospital outpatient and ambulatory surgical center payment systems, starting in 2020. It seeks to address existing payment policies that unintentionally incentivize the prescription of opioids over non-opioid alternatives and will require the Department of Health and Human Services to evaluate and recommend changes to Medicare coverage for these therapies.
