Bill overview
The Superfund Polluter Pays Act aims to ensure that companies responsible for environmental contamination pay for the cleanup. It extends and increases existing taxes used to fund the Superfund program, which helps clean up hazardous waste sites. The bill introduces a new corporate environmental tax, a 0.12% tax on a company’s ‘modified environmental tax taxable income’ – income adjusted to exclude certain losses and deductions – exceeding $3.13 million. This tax will be adjusted for inflation, starting in 2020.
