Bill overview
The Community Safety Act of 2019 aims to improve how law enforcement responds to individuals experiencing mental illness and intellectual and developmental disabilities. It does this by authorizing the Department of Justice to provide grants for training and technical assistance to police departments and related agencies. The bill also increases funding for mental health awareness training programs within the Department of Health and Human Services. Ultimately, the goal is to reduce crime and recidivism associated with these populations.
