Bill overview
The American Energy First Act aims to shift more control over oil and gas development to states. It allows states with existing permitting programs to manage federal permitting on their lands, limits the President’s ability to block oil and gas leases on the Outer Continental Shelf, and establishes revenue-sharing arrangements with coastal states like Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Alaska. The bill also promotes alternative energy development through leasing priority areas and limits the government’s power to impose moratoriums on oil and gas leasing, while addressing issues related to offshore permits and marine mammals.
