Bill overview
The Trafficking Reduction And Criminal Enforcement (TRACE) Act aims to improve firearm tracing and accountability. It requires the Department of Justice to establish regulations for marking firearms with a hidden serial number, mandates that the National Instant Criminal Background Check System maintain records for 180 days, and requires licensed firearms dealers to conduct physical inventory checks. Furthermore, the bill removes restrictions on the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives’ use of firearms tracing data. These changes are intended to help combat the illegal sale of firearms.
