Bill overview
The PrEP Access and Coverage Act aims to increase access to pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), a medication that significantly reduces the risk of HIV transmission, by requiring private health insurance plans and public health insurance programs (Medicare, Medicaid, and CHIP) to cover prescription drugs, related screenings, and clinical follow-ups without cost-sharing. The bill also prohibits denying coverage or increasing premiums based on PrEP use and directs the Department of Health and Human Services to award grants to states and local organizations to provide PrEP services to uninsured individuals, along with a public awareness campaign focused on high-need communities.
