This bill, the Medical Nutrition Therapy Act of 2020, expands Medicare coverage for medical nutrition therapy services. Currently, these services are primarily limited to individuals with diabetes or kidney disease and require a physician referral. This legislation broadens coverage to include a wider range of conditions, such as obesity, eating disorders, cancer, HIV/AIDS, and other diseases determined medically necessary by the Secretary. It also allows for referrals from healthcare professionals beyond just physicians, including nurse practitioners and clinical psychologists for eating disorders.
