Bill overview
The Carbon Monoxide Alarms Leading Every Resident To Safety Act of 2019 (CO ALERTS Act) requires carbon monoxide detectors to be installed in federally assisted housing units, including public housing, supportive housing for seniors and people with disabilities, and rental housing receiving low-income vouchers. The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) will provide guidance to public housing agencies on tenant education, and a study will be conducted to determine if the requirement should be expanded to other types of federally assisted housing. This legislation aims to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning, a preventable and potentially fatal hazard, particularly for vulnerable populations.
