Bill overview
The Safe Temperature Act of 2019 aims to ensure residents of public housing, supportive housing for the elderly, and those receiving low-income housing choice vouchers have a comfortable and safe living environment by requiring temperature levels between 71 and 81 degrees Fahrenheit. This legislation updates existing housing laws to give the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) the authority to enforce these temperature standards. It does this by amending the Housing Act of 1937 and the Housing Act of 1959, allowing HUD to use funds to maintain appropriate temperatures. The goal is to improve the well-being of vulnerable populations living in federally assisted housing.
