Bill overview
The Federal Firefighters Fairness Act of 2019 aims to improve worker’s compensation for federal firefighters who develop certain illnesses related to their jobs. Specifically, the bill establishes a presumption that heart disease, lung disease, and specific cancers contracted by firefighters after at least five years of service are caused by their employment. It also extends this presumption to uncommon infectious diseases like tuberculosis and HIV. The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health will conduct a study to assess the implementation of the bill and related health risks.
