Bill overview
The Airwaves Act, also known as the Advancing Innovation and Reinvigorating Widespread Access to Viable Electromagnetic Spectrum Act, directs the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to expand access to both licensed and unlicensed radio spectrum. Specifically, the FCC must establish a competitive bidding process for at least 500 megahertz of commercially licensed spectrum below 6 gigahertz and make an additional 500 megahertz of unlicensed spectrum available above 5 gigahertz. Furthermore, 10% of the revenue from these spectrum sales will be used to deploy wireless infrastructure in rural areas with limited internet access, while also considering the impact on existing spectrum users.
