Bill overview
The Captive Primate Safety Act amends the Lacey Act to prohibit the import, export, sale, and other commercial activities involving live nonhuman primates. It expands the definition of ‘prohibited wildlife species’ to include these primates and strengthens penalties for violations related to the trade of various animals, including bears, tigers, and other species. The bill also requires the Secretary of the Interior to develop regulations to implement these changes within 180 days of enactment.
