Bill overview
This bill, the Veterans Burn Pits Exposure Recognition Act of 2020, aims to help veterans who may have been exposed to harmful toxins from burn pits during their military service. It establishes a presumption that a veteran deployed to certain locations and timeframes – including Iraq, Southwest Asia, Afghanistan, and Djibouti – was exposed to specific chemicals and hazards. If a veteran’s claim for benefits is denied due to insufficient evidence of exposure, the Department of Veterans Affairs will provide a medical examination and seek a medical opinion to determine if a link exists between the veteran’s health issues and the burn pit exposure.
