Bill overview
This bill, the SERVICE Act, expands access to mental healthcare for veterans. It removes previous requirements that veterans needed definitive medical evidence linking their mental illness to their military service to qualify for hospital care, medical services, and nursing home care through the Department of Veterans Affairs. Specifically, veterans who served in combat zones during major conflicts – including World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Persian Gulf War, Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Enduring Freedom, and subsequent conflicts – are now eligible for this care. The changes take effect on the date the bill is enacted.
