Bill overview
The Closing the Meal Gap Act of 2020 aims to increase food assistance for low-income Americans by revising how SNAP benefits are calculated and expanding eligibility. It proposes a ‘low-cost food plan’ to determine benefit amounts, increases the standard medical expense deduction, and eliminates work requirements for certain SNAP recipients. Importantly, the bill allows Puerto Rico, American Samoa, and the Northern Mariana Islands to participate in SNAP by submitting approved plans of operation, moving them away from block grants.
