Bill overview
The Emergency Direct Payments Act aims to provide additional tax rebates to eligible U.S. taxpayers. Beginning in 2020, individuals with adjusted gross incomes below $75,000 (or $150,000 for joint filers) will receive an additional $1,200 per person ($2,400 for joint returns), plus $500 for each dependent. To be eligible, taxpayers must provide a valid Social Security number, with exemptions for military personnel and for preventing garnishment. The Treasury Department is required to conduct a public awareness campaign to inform taxpayers about these rebates.
