Bill overview
This joint resolution strengthens Congress’s role in decisions regarding the United States’ participation in the North Atlantic Treaty. It requires the Senate’s advice and consent, or an Act of Congress, before the President can suspend, terminate, or withdraw the U.S. from the treaty. The resolution also restricts the use of government funds for withdrawal efforts and authorizes congressional legal counsel to represent Congress in court to oppose such actions. Finally, it mandates notification to Congress of any attempts to withdraw from the treaty.
