Bill overview
The Rural Veterans Travel Enhancement Act of 2021 aims to improve transportation assistance for veterans, particularly those living in rural areas. It permanently extends existing grant programs for transporting highly rural veterans to medical care and makes the VA’s authority to transport veterans for counseling and other services permanent. The bill also directs the GAO to study fraud within the VA’s travel program and assess the effectiveness of mileage reimbursement rates, while requiring pilot programs to explore solutions like advance payments and travel assistance for mental health services. Finally, it mandates a study on improving public transportation access for veterans.
