Bill overview
The Political CRIMES Act establishes an Independent Counsel to investigate potential unlawful political activity by high-ranking federal officials. It directs the Department of Justice to conduct preliminary investigations into violations of laws regarding political activities between 2009 and 2021, particularly involving the President, Vice President, and other senior officials. The bill increases criminal penalties for Hatch Act violations and limits the political activity of these officials while on federal property, while also creating an Inspector General for the Office of Special Counsel and establishing reporting requirements for the Government Accountability Office.
