Bill overview
The Consumer Online Payment Transparency and Integrity Act aims to protect consumers from unexpected charges and unwanted automatic renewals when purchasing goods or services online. It requires companies to clearly disclose automatic renewal or free-to-pay conversion features, provide consumers with a way to easily cancel contracts, and obtain explicit consent before charging for renewals. The bill also addresses ‘dark patterns’ used to manipulate consumer choices and establishes enforcement mechanisms through the Federal Trade Commission.
