Bill overview
This bill extends the existence of the Civil Rights Cold Case Records Review Board, which is responsible for ensuring that federal agencies release records related to unsolved civil rights cases from 1940 to 1979. Currently, the board was set to expire after four years, but this legislation changes that to a seven-year term. The goal is to provide more time for the board to review and address agencies’ decisions to delay the release of these important historical records. This will allow for a more thorough examination of past civil rights violations.
