Bill overview
This bill, the Strengthening Oversight for Veterans Act of 2021, grants the Department of Veterans Affairs Office of Inspector General (VA OIG) the authority to issue subpoenas for witnesses to help them perform their duties. It specifically prohibits the VA OIG from subpoenaing current federal employees or witnesses involved in criminal proceedings. The bill also requires the VA OIG to notify the Department of Justice of any subpoena requests and allows the DOJ to object if the subpoena would interfere with an ongoing investigation. Finally, it mandates the VA OIG to report on its subpoena activities semiannually.
