Bill overview
The Federal Prison Oversight Act establishes a system for increased oversight of Bureau of Prisons (BOP) facilities. It mandates that the Department of Justice Inspector General conduct risk-based inspections, potentially unannounced, of these facilities. The bill also creates an Ombudsman within the DOJ to receive complaints, investigate issues related to incarcerated people and staff, and recommend actions, while prohibiting retaliation against those who report concerns. Finally, it establishes a risk score methodology for prioritizing inspections and provides for family advocacy services.
