Bill overview
The Break the Cycle of Violence Act aims to reduce community violence by providing federal grant programs and establishing related entities. It directs the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to award grants for coordinated community violence intervention initiatives, particularly in communities disproportionately affected by homicides. The bill also creates an Office of Community Violence Intervention, a Community Violence Intervention Advisory Committee, and a National Community Violence Response Center to administer programs, provide training, and coordinate research. Furthermore, it directs the Department of Labor to provide grants for job training in communities impacted by gun violence, focusing on youth ages 16-24.
