Bill overview
The Student Loan Tax Relief Act permanently removes the requirement that student loan forgiveness be tied to a borrower’s death or total and permanent disability. It extends a tax provision that currently excludes student loan discharge income from an individual’s gross income, applying to a broader range of loans including those for postsecondary education, private education loans, and loans made by certain educational organizations. This means that borrowers receiving student loan forgiveness will not have to pay taxes on that forgiven amount.
