Bill overview
The Lawless Cities Accountability Act of 2021 aims to prevent the federal government from providing funding to states or local governments deemed ‘lawless’ due to failing to maintain order. The bill defines a ‘lawless jurisdiction’ as one that restricts law enforcement intervention during violence, withdraws protection from areas where officers are lawfully present, defunds police, or refuses federal assistance during widespread unrest. If a jurisdiction is found to be lawless, it would be ineligible for federal funds until the Attorney General determines it is no longer so. This legislation responds to concerns about rising crime rates and the impact of defunding law enforcement.
