Bill overview
The Toxic Free Food Act of 2021 aims to strengthen the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) regulations regarding substances considered ‘generally recognized as safe’ (GRAS) in food. This bill requires the FDA to revise its rules, prohibiting manufacturers from marketing food containing GRAS substances unless they provide detailed information about the substance’s safety, including cumulative effects and safety factors. It also mandates public access to these determinations and prohibits the use of conflicted experts in GRAS evaluations, while establishing a process for reassessing existing GRAS designations and reactivating a Food Advisory Committee.
