Bill overview
The Repaying the Rural Borderlands Act of 2021 seeks to reimburse individuals, entities, and local governments for losses incurred due to the presence of migrants along the U.S.-Mexico border. Specifically, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) would be required to compensate those who have suffered property damage – including to livestock, crops, and infrastructure – or who have provided care, such as housing and education, to migrants. This bill aims to address the financial burdens placed on communities near the border by border security policies.
