Bill overview
The Foreign Extortion Prevention Act makes it a federal crime for foreign officials to demand or accept bribes, either directly or through others, in exchange for influencing official actions or gaining an unfair advantage. This law grants the U.S. government authority to prosecute these offenses, even if they occur outside of U.S. territory. Violations can result in significant fines or imprisonment, and any penalties collected will be deposited into a fund to support anti-corruption initiatives. The bill also requires the Department of Justice to regularly report on the scope of foreign bribery and the effectiveness of U.S. efforts to combat it.
