Bill overview
The Clean Water Standards for PFAS Act of 2021 directs the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to establish rules and water quality standards for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), which are chemicals linked to potential health risks. Within two years, the EPA must publish health-based water quality criteria for these substances. Within four years, the EPA must create effluent limitations guidelines and standards for priority industries to limit PFAS discharges into waterways. The bill also authorizes the EPA to provide grants to publicly owned treatment works to help them comply with these new regulations.
