Bill overview
The Driftnet Modernization and Bycatch Reduction Act aims to protect marine life by significantly restricting the use of large driftnets. Specifically, it expands the definition of ‘large-scale driftnet fishing’ to prohibit nets with a mesh size of 14 inches or greater, regardless of length. The bill also establishes a five-year transition program to help fishermen move away from these nets and adopt more sustainable fishing practices, with grants available for participation. Finally, it introduces fees for charter operators targeting Pacific halibut to support halibut conservation efforts.
