Bill overview
This bill, the Inflation Prevention Act, creates a procedural rule in the Senate designed to limit spending that could increase inflation. Specifically, it establishes a point of order that would prevent the Senate from considering legislation providing new budget authority if the annualized rate of inflation is above 4.5%. This rule can be waived by a three-fifths vote of the Senate, but appeals of the Chair’s ruling on the point of order also require a three-fifths vote. The Congressional Budget Office will provide estimates to determine the potential impact on inflation.
