Bill overview
This bill, the Allowing Military Exemptions, Recognizing Individual Concerns About New Shots Act of 2022 (AMERICANS Act), amends the National Defense Authorization Act to address discharges of service members based solely on refusal to receive a COVID-19 vaccine. It prohibits adverse actions based solely on this refusal, allows for honorable discharges in certain circumstances, and provides for reinstatement of rank and removal of negative records. The bill also directs the Department of Defense to explore exemptions related to natural immunity, religious beliefs, and underlying health conditions, and to report on religious exemption requests.
