Bill overview
This bill, the CRUCIAL Act of 2021, places restrictions on the President’s ability to impose sanctions on countries within the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (US, Japan, India, and Australia). Specifically, before the President can sanction a significant transaction involving a member of this dialogue, they must certify to Congress that the country isn’t collaborating with the others on security matters deemed critical to U.S. strategic interests. This aims to prevent sanctions from inadvertently undermining the alliance and its goals.
