Bill overview
The Combating Global Corruption Act of 2021 aims to combat corruption in foreign countries by establishing a tiered ranking system for nations based on their efforts to fight corruption. The U.S. State Department will annually assess countries and publicly list them as Tier 1 (meeting minimum standards), Tier 2 (making efforts), or Tier 3 (not making significant efforts). Additionally, the bill requires the State Department to identify and sanction foreign individuals involved in grand corruption, particularly in Tier 3 countries, and to designate anti-corruption points of contact at U.S. embassies in affected nations to coordinate a comprehensive government response.
