Bill overview
The Mental Health Access Improvement Act of 2021 expands Medicare coverage to include marriage and family therapist services and mental health counselor services. It defines these professions and how they are covered, similar to physician services. The bill also removes a restriction that previously excluded these services from payment within skilled nursing facilities and clarifies payment amounts for these services. Finally, it allows marriage and family therapists and mental health counselors to assist with post-hospital discharge plans.
