Bill overview
The SMART Community Policing Act amends the Omnibus Crime Control and Safe Streets Act to expand the Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) program. Specifically, it allows federal funding to be used for mobile crisis teams, co-responder programs, and case management/outreach teams. These teams will work to de-escalate situations involving mental health crises, connect individuals with needed services, and improve outcomes for both law enforcement and the communities they serve.
