Bill overview
The Respect for Marriage Act aims to ensure that all marriages, regardless of the gender of the partners, are recognized under federal law. It repeals the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), which previously defined marriage as between a man and a woman, and establishes that any marriage valid under state law should be recognized by the federal government. The bill also protects the rights of same-sex and interracial couples and provides a mechanism for the Department of Justice to address violations of these protections.
