Bill overview
The Taiwan Deterrence Act aims to bolster Taiwan’s defense capabilities and deter China’s actions against the island. It authorizes increased foreign military financing for Taiwan, subject to a matching contribution from Taiwan, and grants Taiwan the same defense benefits as NATO members, Australia, Japan, South Korea, and New Zealand. The bill also requires reports on Taiwan’s defense development, U.S. priorities for Taiwan security, and annual assessments of Taiwan’s self-defense enhancements. It seeks to strengthen U.S.-Taiwan relations and demonstrate U.S. commitment to Taiwan’s security.
