Bill overview
The Downwinders Parity Act of 2023 expands the Radiation Exposure Compensation Act to provide compensation to individuals who were exposed to radiation from atmospheric nuclear testing and developed certain cancers. Specifically, the bill expands the areas covered under the program to include all of Clark County, Nevada, and Mohave County, Arizona, broadening eligibility beyond the previously defined zones. It also requires the Department of Justice to report on efforts to inform people newly eligible for compensation. This aims to provide support to communities impacted by past nuclear testing.
